Watercolour Painting of the First Manned Balloon Flight

Dated 21 November 1783, this print is the first known watercolour of a hot air balloon. While the artist is unknown, we do know that Benjamin Franklin is depicted in the print. He was the American ambassador to France when he witnessed the successful ascent of the balloon. This was the famous occasion on which, asked what use the balloon could have, he replied, "And what use is a new born babe?" The painting was found by Robert and Liz in March 2005 in the Paris apartment of a branch of the Montgolfier family. It had always been in the family and they were unaware of its historic value.
